Mediterranean Dialogues Started

Mediterranean Dialogues started: Women’s justice struggle in ancient tragedies was discussed

The “Mediterranean Dialogues” event series organized by the Izmir Mediterranean Academy started with the talk titled “Women in Pursuit of Justice in Ancient Tragedies.” The series, which will meet with the people of Izmir every two weeks, will feature not only discussions but also film screenings and workshops.

The new event series of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Izmir Mediterranean Academy, “Mediterranean Dialogues,” has begun. The first event of the series, the talk titled “Women in Pursuit of Justice in Ancient Tragedies,” was held on February 21 at the Izmir Mediterranean Academy’s meeting hall.

The event, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özlem Belkıs and dramaturg Dr. Duygu Kantaytsın Çelenk as speakers, attracted a great deal of attention despite the cold weather.

In the event, moderated by Helin Küçük, the Coordinator of the Mediterranean Academy’s Cultural Desk, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Belkıs framed the discussion around ancient tragedies and a perspective centered on Izmir. “Although the endings of tragedies may not always lead to a conclusion, they provoke a discussion on the concept of justice,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Belkıs, who then spoke about the character of Electra, a woman pursuing justice and challenging the patriarchal system.

Dr. Kantaytsın Çelenk also explored the stories of women in tragedies within the context of justice and gender, focusing on characters such as Medea and Antigone, who are also in pursuit of justice. The discussion was enriched by the contributions of the participants.

The second event is a workshop titled “Women’s Resistance in Art.”

The second event of the “Mediterranean Dialogues,” a workshop titled “Women’s Resistance in Art: Social Issues and Art,” will take place on Thursday, March 6th, at 3:30 PM at the Izmir Mediterranean Academy. The workshop which will be led by Aynur Tıkıroğlu has limited spots available, therefore registration is required for participation. The minimum age for participation is 16.
