Sustainable Life In Mediterranean Coastal Cities
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Izmir Mediterranean Academy, will organize an international symposium, titled “Sustainable Living in Mediterranean Coastal Cities” on December 6th and 7th, 2018.
Symposium aims to share the common values and practices of similar settlements in İzmir and the Mediterranean coast, in order to protect these values and to ensure environmental sustainability.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Izmir Mediterranean Academy, will organize an international symposium, titled “Sustainable Life in Mediterranean Coastal Cities” on December 6th and 7th, 2018.
In this symposium, it is aimed to share the common values and practices ??of similar settlements in İzmir and the Mediterranean coast, in order to protect these values and to ensure environmental sustainability. This symposium aims to address the problems in the process of making more livable and sustainable cities in Mediterranean coastal cities, at the same time, it aims to share integrated solutions and create a special platform within the Mediterranean network for collaborative work. Participation and contributions of urban citizens, researchers, experts, decision-makers, non-governmental organizations and representatives to the symposium are expected.
Considering the ecological, historical, economical, cultural and social values and possibilities of the İzmir Gulf and its impact on the Mediterranean Basin, “The strategy of carrying İzmir Gulf into the agenda of Izmirians ” adopted by the İzmir Mediterranean Academy Science Committee, and a number of event ideas were evaluated.
These activities initiated by the end of 2016, following small focus meetings were carried out through a series of panels held under the tittle of on the Coast of Mediterranean,In these panels: “Values of Gulf of İzmir”, “Gulf of İzmir in Historical Perspective” “Marine Culture in the Gulf of Izmir” “Ecological Approaches to Gulf of İzmir” “Port İzmir and Harbor Management”, “ Marine Transportation in Gulf of İzmir”, “Memory of Gulf of İzmir” which were held with valuable contributions by academicians, bureaucrats, non-governmental organizations and specialists from various professions,public involvement has been provided.With the attendance and contributions of the Izmir citizens, these meetings were held with the opportunity to evaluate the common values and problems of Izmir and the other Mediterranean coastal cities.
Mediterranean Basin, surrounded on the east by Asia, on the South by Africa, on the North by European continents includes different cultures and different ecosystems of thecountries, which are coastal or only in the territory of the Mediterranean region. Turkey is the country with its longest coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The most important element connecting these cultures around a closed sea is maritime and the natural ports which are the key essence of maritime.
In this Symposium; “Sustainable Living in Mediterranean Coastal Cities”,it is expected that sustainable, innovative and integrated urban solution proposals will be developed in Mediterranean coastal cities with invited speakers, who will participate and contribute actively from universities, research centers, central and local governmental and non governmental organizations, public and private sectors.

2-Ecological Sustainability
Integrated Coastal Management (coastal zone planning and management, marine spatial planning) Protection Areas (wetland, protected marine areas and habitat), Data Management (evaluation, modelling and smart sytems) , Monitoring and Risk Management(current,water quality safety, adaptation to climate change)
3-Economical Sustainability
Blue Growth( biodiversity, conservation, energy, fishing, tourism, aquaculture, coastal tourism, blue biotechnology, sea transportation), Port-city Interaction (socio-economic contribution, harbor transformation, renewal of the ports, innovative applications), Establishing Mediterranean Network.
4- Participation/ Governance
Governance Mechanisms and Experiences (technology friendly governance, citizen participation to decision making processes)
