MEDITERRANEAN FOR KIDS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
Launched in 2019, we have transformed the Mediterranean for Kids program into an educational set in order to convey the history of Mediterranean culture and civilization to children with fun/interesting methods, so that children can get to know the geography they live in and gain a different perspective.
Our teaching kit consists of audio/visual storytelling videos, story books, and reinforcement activity books for students and teachers. Developed in alignment with the school curriculum, the aim is for volunteer teachers to apply this cultural heritage education program to students by using open sources. The program content can be applied individually or in the classroom by following the tabs on the left as open source.
For this purpose, our Directorate conducts training of trainers programs as well as sample workshop practices, and provides books and teaching kits to schools that request them.
AUDIO AND VISUAL STORIES
The Mediterranean audio-visual stories last 25 minutes on average, and convey important information about the natural and cultural history of the Mediterranean geography through scenarios embellished with imaginary characters and events. For an effective use, we recommend that you consider the following points:
♦ Do not forget that Mediterranean audio-visual stories are not entertainment-oriented animations, but instead they are educational material which prioritize information transfer. It is important that students and instructors address the syllabus with this preparation.
♦ Instructors are recommended to watch the audio-visual stories beforehand.
♦ Audio-visual stories are designed to be conveyed within one session (35 minutes); however, according to the age level of the audience, it may be preferable to divide an audio story into sections and watch it with breaks for effective use.
♦ Educators are welcomed to integrate their experience and creativity into sessions. If desired, educators can divide the audio stories into sections, pause the video at certain points in order to allow for interactive remarks, and create their own interactive videos for online uses.
♦ For effective comprehension and reinforcement, we recommend that children read the printed storybooks and use the teaching kits after the audiovisual stories.
AKDENİZ: İLK ZAMANLAR ÜLKESİ [MEDITERRANEAN: THE COUNTRY OF EARLY DAYS]
Below, you can watch the audio-visual story of the 250 million-year-old Mediterranean geography, where it started with the birth of the great sea Tethys, and which was home to the first wheat and the first settlement.
AKDENİZ: BATIK GEMİNİN ÖYKÜSÜ [MEDITERRANEAN: THE STORY OF THE SUNKEN SHIP]
Here you can watch the audio-visual story about the rich ties Mediterranean countries have established over the sea for thousands of years, and introduces ancient Mediterranean cultures.
MEDITERRANEAN STORY BOOKS
The contents of the Mediterranean story books are the main components of the Mediterranean for Kids teaching kit. The content of the story books especially support the units “Where We Live” in and “Cultural Heritage” in the curriculum of the 10-12 age / 5th and 6th grades of secondary school. Educational stories are historical narratives embedded in an interesting scenario for the appropriate age group. While the story book Akdeniz: İlk Zamanlar Ülkesi [Mediterranean: The Country of Early Days] focuses on the natural history of the Mediterranean, Akdeniz: Batık Geminin Öyküsü [Mediterranean: The Story of the Sunken Ship] is about the Mediterranean cultural history. For an effective use, we recommend that you consider the following points:
♦ Please consider that Akdeniz [Mediterranean] storybooks are educational material for informative purposes, not for free storytelling. It is important that students and instructors consider this.
♦ When the books are read after the audio stories, they will support the narrative and will help to obtain more productive results.
♦ For an effective comprehension, it is recommended that children complete the activity book after reading the story books – under the supervision of an adult if possible.
It is the short story of the 250 million-year-old great time of the Mediterranean geography, which begun from the Tethys and was home to the first wheat and the first settlement.
It is a surprising story that tells about the rich relationships and ties that Mediterranean countries have established over the sea for thousands of years, and introduces ancient cultures in a chain of events.
ACTIVITY BOOK FOR CHILDREN
It is an educational material that includes original activities developed to reinforce the content of Mediterranean stories, to expand the scope and to understand them in detail with entertaining methods. The activities in the activity book are for the age group of 10-12, and when designing the activity, it is stated which development area the activity is designed to support the child.
For an effective use, we recommend that you consider the following points:
♦ The activities are directly related to the events, characters and information in the stories. Pre-reading of books or watching audiovisual stories is a priority; however, since the activities are designed separately according each story, it is not necessary to finish reading both stories in order to complete the activities.
♦ If you do not have a printed story book or if you will be teaching to a crowded group, you can print and reproduce them from A4 activity sheets prepared for groups.
You can download A4 activity sheets here.

ACTIVITY BOOK FOR INSTRUCTORS
The program aims to learn and teach the geography we live in. The scope of the program includes activity suggestions developed for advanced studies that can be used and developed by instructors in classrooms or workshops, and which can be associated with different disciplines. For an effective use, we recommend that you consider the following points:
♦ The activity suggestions in the trainer’s activity book are not directly related to the stories as in the children’s activity book. The activities can be used for all kinds of environmental and cultural awareness activities and they have a flexible content. It should be understood as a list of recommendations open to the development of the trainers.
♦ The trainer’s activity book is designed to support social studies learning as well as to provide gains for visual arts, music, drama and Turkish learning. Therefore, the participation of the relevant branch educators mentioned in the activity definition section of the activity book will contribute positively to the process.

OUR WORKSHOPS
We have implemented the Mediterranean for Kids program in order to convey the history of Mediterranean culture and civilization to children with fun/interesting methods so that they can make sense of the geography they live in and gain a different perspective.
The program is designed for kindergarten, primary and secondary school students. Different methods such as tales, creative drama, visual narrative, P4C (Philosophy for Children) and interactive videos can be used in accordance with the age and pedagogical level of children. Developed in alignment with the course curriculum, the main purpose of the program is to reach the teachers/instructors and enable them to apply this program within the classroom. For this purpose, our Directorate conducts training of trainers programs as well as sample workshop practices, and provides books and teaching kits to schools that request them.
After the workshops held in the classroom environment, children visit the excavation sites by participating in the practice workshops organized by the Directorate of Historical Sites and Cultural Assets. Thus, children complete the program as ‘Mediterranean Volunteers’.
